UPS Retires Its MD-11 Fleet Permanently

UPS Cargo announced that it has permanently withdrawn its fleet of 27 MD-11 freighters from service and will record a post-tax charge of $137 million as part of this decision. The company stated that even if the aircraft were deemed airworthy again by civil aviation authorities following the accident in early November, they would not be returned to the fleet.

The announcement was made during UPS’s quarterly earnings call on January 27. The decision followed the crash of UPS Flight 2976 on November 4 in Louisville, which was recorded as the deadliest accident in UPS Airlines’ history. A total of 15 people, including the three-member UPS flight crew, lost their lives in the حادث.

UPS CEO Carol Tomé said during the first earnings call after the accident, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who lost their lives and everyone affected by this tragedy.”
